Creative ways to teach Road Safety

Teaching road safety is extremely important at all ages, with children at a major risk of road traffic incidents if they aren’t taught properly. Children’s ability to be socially active is affected by their understanding of road safety, making it an important aspect of education for children of varying ages.

There are fantastic resources such as Brake, THINK! Road Safety for advice, tips and tricks on incorporating road safety into education within the classroom. All of these websites and organisations provide extensive advice on how to teach children of varying ages how to be safe around road traffic.

However, alongside working Road Safety teaching into the classroom, there are also other creative ways to ensure your pupils understand how to be safe surrounding roads.

Encouraging road safety outside the classroom

Following on from classroom learning it is important to encourage children to continue to practice road safety awareness. Helping children to understand the practicalities of road safety ensures they understand how to implement their learning outside the classroom.

A fantastic way to do this is by implementing road safety learning into the playground by using thermoplastic playground markings. Thermoplastic markings can cover a huge range of topics which are also included in the curriculum, enabling children to further their learning from the playground.

In particular, road safety markings can help children to become familiar with the key tasks such as crossing the road. At UniPlay we have worked with many schools and nurseries who help them creative unique playgrounds which educate their children on essential knowledge such as road safety.

Interactive play also helps children to develop key social and communication skills, something which is also encouraged via playground markings. All of these factors mean that interaction with playground markings can help to develop skills which are essential for children to understand the principles of road safety.
