Sports Premium Funding to continue alongside School Games Programme in 22/23 academic year
Announced at the end of the last academic year, Sports Premium funding is set to continue for the 2022/2023 academic year. Backed by a £320 million funding pot this resource will continue to provide opportunities for young people to engage in 1 hour of physical activity per day.
The aim of Sports Premium funding is to provide more children with access to high quality PE lessons and opportunities to take part in sport of various types. This funding is focused on all sporting abilities and so, covers the entire Primary School age group.
Alongside this funding, the School Games programme is continuing, which provides access to an £11 million fund, supported by Sport England National Lottery.
What is the School Games Programme?
The School Games Programme provides support and guidance to schools at all points of education, helping pupils to engage in competitive sport. The main aim of this sporting programme is to develop sporting talent from a young age, centering this around a positive environment to inspire, motivate and give confidence to young people.
Interestingly 29 School Games alumni have gone on to win medals at the Tokyo Olympics, showing what an impact the programme can have on a young person’s potential.
As part of the process, schools who take part in the School Games Programme can apply for funding and support to enable them to take part in the games and schedule. Other support is also offered such as Toolkits which support teachers in helping their pupils to understand the positives of engaging in sporting competitions. Everything within the programme aims to increase engagement in competitive sport, hoping to help pupils find and work on their talents from a young age.
The network currently consists of over 18,000 schools who actively take part in School Games’ competitions. More information on how to take part or apply to be in the programme can be found via their website.
